Shadow of the Wind, or history of a pen
I first read Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafon. Here is my personal assessment (trying to be the least possible spoilérica-those who have read; which apparently left a hole, you have a spoiler-fledged )
Had to put a soundtrack to this novel (which is composed Zafón Pretty thin except for the first song ) would Le Matin by Yann Tiersen , which I think illustrates perfectly monochromatic atmosphere.
The novel is set in the Barcelona of the 20 and 30. A city full of buildings from the 14th century Modernism, bathed in the splendor of the music and the bustle of industrial buildings. An evocative and moving story whose protagonists are a city, a war, literature and the inevitability of love. The iconography film so characteristic of the novel, the image and likeness of Victorian London of Dickens, create a virtual scenario, an urban phantasmagoria that lets you hold the melodrama and ends that used to build characters and intrigue. As an example, the sites have connotations of dramatic efficacy: the old railway stations which are presented as vehicles of escape to another life away from the pain that exudes the city, or the Castle of Montjuïc, another type of vehicle that does not offer any return.
classic is a real tragedy that has the tear component as bait for the reader. It is a book that looks like a generalized mass : who is unaware of the city, the atmosphere built around its streets and avenues, who has not experienced civil war, offering a slight historical perspective to help understand the anguish and hopeless attitude of some people , as the father of Daniel, and who knows both places, allowing more so involved in climate zafoniense Gothic.
For this reason, I lack deepen the historical character of the novel : provides a surface treatment, arguing that the war in the streets he lived far away, with some shooting another at midnight and a widespread feeling that Life went with near-absolute normality. The writer says that after the war, a climate of shame and cowardice, for fear the result of the miseries been forced into silence and rotate the view to the Mediterranean. It is also true that features personal stories that just need some contextual dye as for a man who discovers that a 17-year love to a corpse who perished along with their son, little care about the military strategies of the Civil War.
The plot, in my opinion, very well structured and organized, with its temporal leaps that weave the story to escape the predictability and increasing the suspense of the play. However, it offers too easily on the task spinning to explain the outcome of the book, the absolute truth in first person and in an orderly and very detailed, especially unboosted reconstructive ability reader.
fluency and easy lively prose (though poetic) in line with his previous novels for young does not simplify the story, but a vision of innocence that the hands of an inexperienced player is absolutely true and invites us to grow and fully integrate it in that languid Barcelona 30.
As for the characters, except Fermin, whose personality is quite different caricatured and defined, in general are overly simplified and abducted by their actions. underlines the protagonist, who should grab one-tenth of the attention that captures Julian Carax, the narrated life and miracles. It is also true that Daniel intended to find information about the writer's life, so it's fairly logical that this appears in the foreground during the 600 pages; but the story is first reduced to the overcoming of cowardice against a second love story pure and idyllic that stands in the death.
short, this is a good novel aimed at readers of all kinds, especially those without impediment clineex supply spend. Personally I am left with the intention of the reader to reflect that interpretation reading is given by the reader's literary experience and their own convictions, that is, that the book is a mirror (concave, I would say) and we can only find in it what we already carry inside .
Now it's game angels l.
